Abstract:

After the North Cape oil spill along the south coast of Rhode Island in 1996, it became obvious that it was difficult to determine the amount of damage to the impacted natural resources, in part because the appropriate monitoring data were in cumbersome, disparate formats, making it difficult to obtain the necessary information. Since then, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) has initiated an effort to compile all appropriate data into a geographic information system (GIS) in order to alleviate this problem. Included in this effort is a project headed by the Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NBNERR) in cooperation with the University of Rhode Island's Environmental Data Center (URI-EDC) to obtain all appropriate long-term biological monitoring datasets for estuarine natural resources and format them into Microsoft Access databases, from which they can be queried, imported into ESRI GIS software, and viewed. In this way, a large amount of data can be queried and viewed (in both tabular and cartographic formats) in a short period of time to aid in oil spill damage assessment and a myriad other applications (e.g., permitting, research, education, etc.).

Purpose:

Surveys of shellfish in Narragansett Bay have been conducted by the RIDEM Division of Fish and Wildlife, under the direction of Dennis Erkan. Surveys began in 1993, although they were not conducted every year since then. To date, survey data are available for 1993, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002. Overall, samples have been collected between May and November. Data for ten species (or categories) are included in the shellfish dataset. This includes quahogs, broken, oysters, mussels, starfish, crabs, moon snails, whelks, M. pitar, and others. Data are presented as the number of each category collected per sample location, per year.

Data from this survey were not transferred into an Access database, primarily due to the fact that the exact station locations were not necessarily the same from year to year. Without the same stations and associated station names each year, it is not possible to query an Access shellfish database and then link the queried data to a coverage based on station or location name. Instead, separate coverages, including all the associated shellfish data in the attribute table, were developed for each available year of the survey.
