| Bay Buoy Monitoring | '; chem2 += 'Bay fixed-site monitoring data are provided by the cooperative efforts of the RI Department of Environmental Management Water Resources Division, the Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, the Narragansett Bay Commission, the URI Graduate School of Oceanography, Roger Williams University, and the Bay Window Program. Buoys were equipped with two sondes that measured temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and depth at approximately 1 meter from the bottom and 0.5 meters below the surface. Once every month a heavily instrumented oceanic sampler is towed on a circular transect through the East and West Passages, Rhode Island Sound, Mount Hope Bay and the Providence River. Surface sediments were collected from 40 stations and sediment cores from 3 locations from the bays and their major tributaries. It contains a small portion of the results obtained from three major research projects undertaken at the Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island between the years 1985-2003. | Insomniac Monitoring | '; chem6 += 'During several summers in the late 1980s and early 1990s, fish kills, thought to be the result of oxygen depleted waters, occurred in the upper sections of Narragansett Bay. Unfortunately, no data were available to document dissolved oxygen levels that may have been associated with the fish kills. To address this lack of data, Dr. Christopher Deacutis of Narragansett Bay Estuary Program (NBEP) organized a survey team to measure dissolved oxygen throughout the upper Bay and Providence River. This volunteer team, later dubbed "The Insomniacs", was made up of boat groups from various organizations in the Rhode Island and Massachusetts area with an interest in water quality issues in Narragansett Bay and its watershed.
